The first thing you must not do is to keep flushing with the hope that whatever is blocking it will let go. This will not happen and the end result is that you will fill the toilet bowl with a lot of water and may even drain back out when it fills up. This will make your repair work more difficult.

What you need to do is to put on your hand gloves and place some old newspaper or towels on the floor. This is a safety measure to prevent the contents of the toilet spilling on the bare floor if it overflows.

You can then get a bucket of cold water and pour it down the drain. The water will need to have some pressure behind it, so you can stand up and pour it from around chest level. Make sure not to pour too fast because if the water does not push out the clog, it will just remain in the bowl. Make sure you don’t pour it to over halfway up the bowl in case you have to use your plunger, this it will make it splash everywhere.

If you do this and it still doesn’t work, you will then need to turn off the water supply and use the plunger. You can place the plunger underwater to get the best results. If there is not enough water in the bowl, add some so that the plunger is submerged. Make sure the plunger covers the hole in the bowl entirely, and then give it a few firm, fast pumps. Sometimes this will do the trick right away and the water will drain.
